17th Congress of the European Society for Evolutionary Biology

ESEB 2019

Academic Professor Craig Primmer, in collaboration with the evolutionary biologists at the University of Turku, organised the ESEB2019 congress in Turku, at Logomo, without compromising the principles of sustainable development. 1300 participants from 47 countries gathered in Turku for a 6-day congress, which, according to participant feedback, was a great success.

The congress paid attention to even the smallest details to minimise environmental impact. In support of open science, researchers worldwide had the opinion to access congress presentations through online live broadcasts and recordings, in addition to physical attendance.

This is how it was done

  • Aboa was involved in managing all practical arrangements, including event communication, registration and payment processes, budgeting, abstract management processes, as well as website and mobile app management.
  • Expert seminars
  • Workshops and meetings
  • 543 talks
  • 573 posters
  • 150 hours of live streaming
  • The congress’s evening celebration was held on the final night at Moomin World in Naantali.

“It was a pleasure working with Aboa in organising the ESEB2019 congress. Their knowledge of local service providers was crucial in transforming my (at times vague) visions into practical solutions, allowing me as the lead organiser to focus more on the scientific content of the congress. We were particularly keen on minimizing environmental impacts, and Aboa was able to provide excellent solutions in collaboration with local partners.

The quality of Aboa’s services is perhaps best reflected in the feedback survey, where many respondents chose “excellent arrangements” as one of the best aspects of the congress. I can recommend them as organisers for meetings of all sizes!”

The aim of the host of the ESEB2019 congress, Academy Professor Craig Primmer, was to ensure that every aspect of the congress was superior to anywhere else. This passionate goal challenged collaborators to devise new solutions for creating a successful event. The largest congress of 2019 in Turku achieved its goal and the cooperation went smoothly with Logomo (the congress venue), Sunborn (catering), Rajulive (technology), Kajahdus (website), Moomin World (congress dinner), and the Turku City Congress Unit (advertising).

The green choices made for the ESEB2019 congress established sustainable practises for future event organisers. The Urban Legends delegate bags, made from surplus fabrics and distributed to congress attendees, were previously ordered from abroad. However, the environmentally focused congress inspires the City of Turku to procure the fabric bags through the Valmennuspiste employment service center. Additionally, the material of the congress shirts was switched to recycled cotton.
